Tino Rodriguez’s paintings exist in a liminal space, embracing an ambiguity that expands perception. The blending of stories, from different backgrounds, within reminiscently religious and dreamlike surroundings, create an out of this world reality. Yet, these worlds are akin to a waking dream, allowing for the possibility to experience images of fantasy within his Personal Fairylands and Personal Mythology.
Tino Rodriguez expertly weaves together elements from Catholic idolatry, European Fairy Tales, Celtic fables, Mexican myths, and Native American legends as he explores the complexity of spirituality, sexuality and transformation. The duality found in Western religions - good and evil, heaven and hell, spirit and body - intermingle in a vision that makes such distinctions irrelevant.
Tino Rodriguez represents human exuberance and decadence through his exploration of the complexity of human sexuality, transformation, longing and transgression. Through questioning rationality, he creates a syncretic universe in which all is integrated, whether it be good or dark.
Tino Rodriguez was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. He moved to California when he was 13 years old. He studied at Santa Monica College and La Sorbonne in Paris. He holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque).
